If you want a beautiful house and don’t care about what is going on during the remodeling project, you might be happy with Kamran from AVA.
If you are trying to personalize your house by being involved in materials selections and designs then I suggest you pick someone else. Your life will be less stressfull and you would not be second guessing yourself if you can trust your contractor with the home remodeling project.
Kamran, for lack of better word, lacks management skills and ability to plan ahead of time. He'd rather plan and do one step of a time not giving his clients the secure feelings that he knows what is going on next. He tried to do a lot with limited resources that in the end all of his clients suffer equally in terms of delayed completion date. I toured a house that was almost finished (the owner has moved in and Kamran needs only do the final touches) the day I signed the contract. Three weeks later, the house still needs 'final touches'. Another house, this one is our friend's house, was supposed to be done two month after we signed our 3-month contract. When my house is done, that house was still one month away from completion date. You get the idea.
If you were asking for a periodic follow up, Kamran would just disregard your request. I suspect this is because he didn't work close enough with his supervisor and staffs to know what is going on with each of his projects in any particular week.
He would politely listen to your ideas and wishes but then would still do it his way without telling you first (ie. ripping out the old floor when you say you want to keep the old floor for now because of the budget issue and then charge you extra for a replacement).
You would need to have a very understanding coworker and boss since Kamran would make appointments to sit down with you to work out some designs and then cancel at the last possible minute (literally) not just once but many many times.
I could go on and on.
All in all, it's just a matter of how involved do you plan to be in the remodeling project and if you can handle all the extra stress. Until the house is done, you kind of stuck in this stage of your life, unable to plan ahead since you are out of loop on things that needed to be done before the house is finished.
I hope this helps Kamran get his act together because I really think he wanted to do great things for his clients, he just didn't know how. Some of his past clients that I talked to shared similar feelings that I have. It's kind of a bittersweet journey for us, one that we remembered well and didn't care to repeat.
No matter how beautiful my house looks like now, I would not wish for my friends and families to experience these agonizing months. Maybe I would suggest Kamran to my boss or my ex, just to get the economy rolling. Maybe.
