Fraudulent company!
Our family received a Val-Pak ad for a sofa steam clean for $85. When the cleaner came my wife was told that the steam cleaning would not be sufficient and could actually make the sofa dirtier! The company told us that only their "deep cleaning" would be sufficient, at nearly four times the advertised cost ($300).
Strangely, the company also told my wife that they would only take "cash" for the deep cleaning and wanted to have an up-front payment of $150 (the "deep cleaning" would have been scheduled on a different day)!
When my wife refused, the cleaner became angry and threatening and demanded $35 for coming to our house. My wife felt so threatened that she handed over the $35, even though the ad didn't state anywhere that the company would charge for consultations. (On a side note, my wife is not particularly timid.)
Interestingly, the company has had 25 complaints with the BBB over the last three years alone (of which 10 have not been resolved to the customer's satisfaction). And their Yelp reviews portray a consistent pattern of deceit and up-selling.
