Unquestionably one of the worst mistakes we made was to hire D & D Builders for a window replacement and remodel project. The owner, Dan Sierras is a licensed contractor and assured us that he only worked with permits. However, once we had signed the contract, he strongly recommended we complete our remodel project and permit afterwards, saying that the problem would be his and that he would just get a slap on the hand. Wrong! We could have lost thousands of dollars later trying to permit something that was already built. After a couple of weeks of construction, we asked him to halt and get permits. The upshot is that he abandoned us for more than three months while he went to other projects. Because it was a bedroom/bath remodel, we were out of our home for all of that time. Despite our pleas to expedite things, we basically were involved in this project from end of October until the first of April. All of that time to remodel a bath and add on about 300 square feet. Other problems:
-Mr. Sierras has a serious anger management problem. He was shaking with anger after the first inspector who showed up realized Mr. Sierras had built without permits and left without completing the inspection. He used foul and insulting language to describe the project and our home when after nearly 4 months of construction we insisted he complete the contract. He got into my husband's face, yelling at him after he showed up at the final inspection. -His building skills are inconsistent, and the people he subs appear to be right off the street. His painters dripped paint on my furniture and some of my art work. His painters spilled paint on the new Jacuzzi tub. They did not finish the molding in the bathroom. He didn't provide proper support for a beam he constructed in the attic. We had major flooding during the January rains because he hadn't closed up the roof properly and was out on another job. He installed an expensive art glass window with a chip in it and didn't inform us. We had to take care of it with the retailer ourselves and have it replaced. His plumber installed a faulty shower handle, which fell off after one week of using the shower. We are now more than seven months into this "project", we have paid for everything, and we still cannot use our new shower. And so on. -He overcharged us on the last payment with no receipts or explanation. He threatened to sue us for more if we didn't pay him immediately. We had always paid exactly on time for previous payments, and there were no written agreements for a change in the contract.
D & D Builders seriously lack professionalism in their field. Instead of feeling really happy about our remodel, we have been burdened with excessive inconvenience and have had to deal with a bad attitude from the builder as well.
